We don’t need to wait for the history books
In the wake of President Trump’s shameful statements on Charlottesville, Republicans have a decision to make: Will they finally stand up and condemn the president now that he’s defended white supremacists?
We’ve already seen business leaders jump ship from Trump’s advisory councils. Now, we’ll find out if any of his powerful allies on Capitol Hill will leave him behind.
Several Democratic representatives just released a resolution calling on Congress to censure — to formally condemn — President Trump’s behavior. Prominent conservatives are already calling on Republicans to take this strong, public step away from Trump. The big question is: Will any Swing District Republicans listen?

Until we can win back the House, the best way to slow Trump down is to cut off his political support in Congress. That starts with members of his party clearly and publicly condemning his awful behavior.
That’s why the bill introduced by Reps. Jerry Nadler, Bonnie Watson Coleman, and Pramila Jayapal to formally censure President Trump for blaming “both sides” in Charlottesville is so important.
This is a no-brainer for anyone with a conscience. History will not be kind to the Republicans who fail this test. But some of us don’t want to wait for the history books.
